News: Miyamoto Discusses Wii Fit on Wii U

Shigeru Miyamoto discusses how the Wii U could improve Wii Fit.

The exercise title Wii Fit was released a number of years ago but it seems Shigeru Miyamoto was never fully satisfied with it. Speaking about the Wii U console in an E3 special of Iwata Asks, which has only just been released, Mr. Miyamoto spoke about his desire to play Wii Fit without turning on the television.

One of the initial ideas behind the Balance Board, included with Wii Fit, was to allow users to weigh themselves without turning on the television. That didn't pan out but Mr. Miyamoto notes with the Wii U it may be possible as the controller could display your weight and some graphs. He feels that people may not have enough time to do training in front of the television each day but just checking your weight is "enough".

Interestingly Shigeru Miyamoto also talks about how the Wii U could expand Wii Fit by utilising the controller's camera. Mr. Miyamoto claims that it could check your status as you're playing, with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata adding "it certainly seems possible from an engineering standpoint that the camera will recognise you if you position the new controller to look at you". Whether this means a new Wii U edition of Wii Fit will be released or if the existing title, or Wii Fit Plus, will be updated by the Wii U remains to be seen.
