News: Miyamoto Talks 3DS, Zelda and eShop

Gaming icon Shigeru Miyamoto talks to The Guardian about what he's working on, the future of Nintendo and what he'd like to see remade for the 3DS.

Given Shigeru Miyamoto's numerous contributions to the video game industry it is no wonder he is in high demand but The Guardian recently got a chance to speak to him and he opened up about the 3DS and what gamers can expect in the future.

Miyamoto states that he is currently working on Star Fox 64 3D, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Super Mario 3D this year before adding Mario Kart, so whether or not this means the title has slipped into 2012 is unclear.

Speaking about Super Mario 3D Mr. Miyamoto largely just reiterates what he has already said. He says it will be a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 64 and the tail on the logo was indeed intentional. Essentially he just says gamers will have to wait until E3 to find out more but thankfully that is not too far away.

The highly anticipated The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D has been given a number of upgrades from the N64 original, with one particular one Shigeru Miyamoto feels is worth mentioning is the frame rate. The original game had a frame rate of 20 frames per second but the 3DS version will run at 30 frames per second. He also commented on some of the other differences between the original and the remake:

"In the original, it was really difficult, say, to change into your boots in the water dungeon, but now it's easy. And in the original, it could be confusing when, say, using the bow, whether you were supposed to push the stick up or down to aim it but now we have the gyro-sensor on the 3DS, it's easy."

Mr. Miyamoto shares an interesting tip on the best way to play Star Fox 64 3D - sit in an office chair. The game will use both traditional controls and the gyro-sensor and combining these is key to succeeding, so he recommends using an office chair to help with movement. He also notes that the 3D effect can strain your eyes if you use it too long so he recommends adjusting it to find the best way for you to play.

Moving onto the console's inbuilt software Shigeru Miyamoto notes that he is not really involved in SpotPass when asked but describes how "without you knowing, things like films will be coming to you." The upcoming update is also discussed but he remained tight-lipped on pricing when it comes to the eShop. When asked if Nintendo would make games based on their franchises for the eShop he replied:

"The main software, we would create for packaged games. But if there are any meaningful ideas for download if it was something that worked when it was always there [on the 3DS], then maybe. I think, for me, a download game would be something anyone could play and that is comfortable to play. So it's not really about forcing a game into the hardware."

Finally Shigeru Miyamoto listed Xevious as a game he'd like to see remade on the 3DS. He comments that in the past game design was about what games was best on each system and while this still somewhat rings true today he argues that developers should "understand all the mechanisms in games, otherwise the movement or the gameplay would not be right". He also notes that games should be unique nowadays and this should show itself in the game's production.

"It's costly if you do something because other people are doing it, but the focus should be: 'Because people are not doing it, we'll go this way.' Uniqueness is important. Finance-wise, you can put more budget in, but your energy has to be focused on something, otherwise it won't work. For me, if you tell me, 'I've seen this before,' or 'I've done this before,' that's challenging."
