Shigeru Miyamoto on why Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't have the same kind of story as its predecessor, and more...
Speaking to Wired, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto has made clear he expects the plot of Galaxy 2 to be a lot simpler than the first (which, in our minds, was satisfyingly different from the usual cake-filled scenarios, filled with black holes, big bangs, and a new princess with a hidden past who looked strangely similar to Peach).
One piece of story in Galaxy 2 includes the little wooden tree stump fellow in the trailer, but the sequel will in general keep the story to a "bare minimum", since Miyamoto stated he feels the Mario games "aren't particularly suited" to heavy story. Said Shigsy:
"I just feel that the Mario games are something that should be a much more bright and active experience. With the Mario games, you don't need to have such a complicated setting where you have these particular characters with complicated backstories that can weigh down the bright and fun feel of the game."
Contrast this to the viewpoint of a certain Yoshiaki Koizumi, director of Mario games, who disagrees with Miyamoto's story-free philosophy and famously stated back in 2007 that he had been trying to sneak bits of story into Mario and Zelda titles without Miyamoto realising his entire time at Nintendo. Indeed, Miyamoto says he's also been trying to tone down the level of story in the New Super Mario Bros. Wii game.
"They always want to have these dramatic scenes where Princess Peach gets kidnapped, but I always tell them, no, it's fine Princess Peach likes cake, so you can just have them use cake as bait to kidnap Princess Peach, and that's enough."
