News: Miyamoto Talks Game Design

Read the unorthodox way Miyamoto measures reaction to his games, along with his thoughts on Twilight Princess' poor Japanese sales.

Legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto has recently been interviewed by Entertainment Weekly, and had some choice comments to share. Saying that his game design ethic was to try and "create new experiences that are fun to play" rather than just looking for what people want means that he feels he "could make Halo. It's not that I couldn't design that game. It's just that I choose not to." The mind boggles as to what a Miyamoto-designed Halo title would be like.

Instead of focus-groups, Miyamoto has said he prefers to show the game to people and not ask them their opinion, but to just "watch their eyes and their face while they play. Do they smile? Do they look frustrated? So I guess I do test my games but it isn't very scientific." The mind boggles again as to what being allowed to test one of Miyamoto's games while he examines your eyes would be like.

On a sad note, he also mentioned he was disappointed with the sales for the latest Zelda game in Japan. He reasoned that perhaps the gamers who bought the Wii are "not necessarily the types of people who are interested in playing that kind of game. And a lot of the people who would want to play it can't find a Wii! But mostly, I think it's that there are fewer and fewer people who are interested in playing a big role-playing game like Zelda." We just hope this doesn't effect the series' future too greatly.
