News: Miyamoto Warming To HD Wii?

Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto has some encouraging things to say about HD graphics for the Wii!

Nintendo have been unrepentant at leaving high-def capabilities out of the Wii, citing gameplay as being more important, the relatively few HD TVs in homes when the console launched, and the fact that leaving such graphical prettiness out allowed for a cheaper console, meaning a significantly lower price point compared to its HD-enabled rivals.

Now, several years on, there are a lot more HD-ready TVs out there. Surely Nintendo must now be considering a move to HD, maybe for their next home console? Industry Gamers recently attended a roundtable interview with Nintendo's legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, and put the question to him:

"I don't think there's anything wrong with pretty graphics, and if I'm a consumer that has an HDTV, I'd want to be able to play my games with nice graphics too. And I think as we've seen the penetration rates for HDTV increase, we're going to see video games and Nintendo's games move along in step with the progression of technology.
"But what I don't think is necessarily true is that the graphics itself is something that's going to make the gameplay experience better. So we're still going to focus on the gameplay, but we'll take advantage of the technology as it comes out."

It seems that while Miyamoto is still repeating the age old Nintendo mantra of 'gameplay over graphics', Nintendo are warming to the idea of HD as a necessity now more people have the capabilities in their homes.

Does the lack of HD graphics in the Wii affect you? Must Nintendo adopt HD sooner rather than later? Let us know your thoughts below!
