News: Mysterious Upcoming Games

While everyone is looking forward to more information regarding games such as Metal Gear Solid, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Wario World, F-Zero, at E3, that will take place in Los Angeles in mid-May, some other GameCube titles that we basically have no information about should also be analysed. Amongst this group let's focus on Barbie Horse Adventure (I personally can't wait for this one), Army Men Platoon, Army Men RTS, Crash Nitro Kart, The Cat In The Hat, Road Trip: Arcade Edition, The Fairly Odd Parents: Breakin' Da Rules (hope the game won't live up to the extremely lame title), Highway to Hell and Phoenix.

Barbie: the one word nobody likes to hear as a title of their videogame. If we put aside the prejudices, we have a typical racing game, except...on horses. The title will be published by Vivendi Universal and developed by Knowledge Adventure, also in charge of another game I will be later mentioning in this list. If your mother is bugging you because of your masculine game collection that doesn't appeal to your little sister, this is your chance to include a feminine title in your library. On the other hand, if you're really into horse racing and Ken then this is the game for you.

Army Men Platoon Command and Army Men RTS are part of the long-going and relatively-successful Army Men series by 3DO. The first will see an October release in the United States while the second will be out on American shelves earlier, in June. Platoon Command is an action game that will be similar to all the other Army Men games, you control a squadron of plastic soldiers, called the Green Army, that have objectives to carry out in household setting like the kitchen or the backyard. A mix between Toy Story and Medal of Honour, if I may. Army Men RTS on the other hand, as the title says, is a real-time strategy game. The game has already been released on the PlayStation 2 receiving mediocre scores from its reviewers. Even though you have bulldozers, dump trucks, flamethrowers, bazooka men, at your disposal, cool units don't make a game. What this game gains in variability it lacks in gameplay. Let's hope this (major) problem of monotonous RTS gameplay will be solved by the release on the Cube.

Crash Nitro Kart is a racing game published and developer by Universal Interactive that will be released on November 11th, 2003 in the USA. The kart-racing game will feature all your favourite characters from the hit title: Crash Bandicoot. The game will be an obvious competitor of Mario Kart, which will also be released this year (hopefully), and so far looks like the crowd from the Mushroom Kingdom is ahead in an "anticipation" sense.

Our second game being developed by Knowledge Adventure is The Cat In The Hat. Judging by the Dr.Seuss-style name, this will be a game aimed at the younger crowd of GameCube player. It will be an adventure game with little chance of appealing to the "normal" (from age 10 and up) gamer. Only time will tell if this project is somehow associated to the movie, that has yet to be released, bearing the same name. Anyways, it's nice to still see companies completely dedicated to a certain age group by making titles such as The Cat In The Hat.

Another game I want to discuss is Road Trip: Arcade Edition, created by a new California based company called Conspiracy. With some luck, this group of individuals will be talented enough to create a decent racing game, something that the GameCube is lacking (so far), in my opinion. More news about this game will be revealed to you by Cube Europe in the future.

The Fairly Odd Parents: Breakin' Da Rules is a game based on a television cartoon transmitted in the UK and the US. The two main characters are Cosmo and Wanda, and they cooperatively discover that their magical powers are gone. To retrieve them they must discover pages from the "Da Rules" book (which explains the title the game). This adventure game will be shipped during the last quarter of this year, in the US.

Highway to Hell is a racing game brought to us by the great Midway. Not much is known about this mysterious game, let's hope more information will be revealed at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in about a month.

The last game I want to discuss is Phoenix, which isn't only the name of a bird and the capital of Arizona, it's also the name of a videogame that will be released for the GameCube later this year. This action game is a working title from Kemco, also in charge of Universal Studios Theme Park Adventure for Nintendo's next generation console (a not-so-great game, from what I've heard). Hopefully Kemco have learnt their lesson and will be able to deliver a steady action title with Phoenix, not to be confused with Capcom's shooter Dead Phoenix.
