News: New Details On ASH

Or Archaic Sealed Heat, if you will. We've got the latest info on the Mistwalker RPG inside.

Headed by father of Final Fantasy, Hironobu Sakaguchi's development studio Mistwalker announced ASH at the Nintendo DS conference earlier this month. He's interviewed in the latest issue of Famitsu, where he reveals plenty of new tidbits on the game.

The title actually uses pre-rendered CG for its battle visuals. Instead of 2D or polygon visuals, Sakaguchi said he found pre-rendered visuals looked fresh, crisp and clean on the tiny DS screen.

The storyline goes as follows. The Archaic Sealed Heat is a magical flame sealed away in ancient times. All burned by the flame turn to ash, including the main character Queen Aisha's servants, who all die when her castle burns down. She is the only survivor, though her servants come partially back to life - their bodies remain in ash form, but their memories and heart return.

Gameplay will be exclusively via the stylus, which makes sense as the game utilises a grid-based map on the touch-screen on which you move units around. On the top screen, you get to see a close up view of your characters. Battle commands can be easily controlled via the touch screen, while the again shows the action.

As previously mentioned by Sakaguchi, the game's development team refers to the title's genre as "Team Tactics." The game could even be released under the title "Team Tactics Series ASH." Apparently the Team Tactics label comes about from the mix of RPG and Strategy elements included in the battle system.

Speaking of the battle system, main character Aisha is said to wield a gun that can be equipped with swords. An interesting idea, though it still might not make the final version of the game.

The title is still a way from completion, though the plot and battle system have been finalised. It'll take another year for the rest of the game to come up to scratch however. We just hope we see it in Europe once it finally is finished!
