The car racing genre has been nearly absent on GameCube up to this point in the console's lifecycle. Fortunately, that will change in 2002, with games like Race of Champions from Activision.
Race of Champions is based on an annual car race where F1, Le Mans, Rally, and other types of cars are pitted against one another in a huge race. Race of Champions will include over 20 licensed vehicles and will include realistic damaging. Gamespot described the damaging in depth.
"We saw all sorts of things getting dented and dirty and ultimately flying off entirely, parts like bumpers, hoods, doors, windows, and the like. Many of the cars' parts seem fully physically modeled as well, which made for some interesting dynamics--antennae would sway, doors would flip open and closed."
There will also be numerous gameplay modes, including:
Rally Cross- standard circuit races
Hill Climb
Checkpoint, Elimination- the last car in each lap will be eliminated
Follow the Leader- players have a life bar that depletes when they do not lead the race
Relay- players to trade off laps with their teammates
