News: Nintendo Experimented With 3D Wii Games

In order to prove that the 3DS could work Nintendo converted several Wii games into stereoscopic 3D.

While the 3DS is currently selling like crazy in Japan and breaking records in the UK selling the concept of the console to the executives at Nintendo was initially so difficult that they converted several Wii games into stereoscopic 3D.

Hideki Konno spoke to Kotaku about this process and claims that Nintendo attached an LCD screen to the Wii and play games such as Mario Kart Wii, Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Sports, as well as others, in 3D.

"One thing that was particularly impactful was on Wii Sports golf. When you got to the green, you were actually able to see the undulation of the green itself and were able to understand the distance between you and the hole and how the terrain rolled up or down, side-to-side and whatnot. And not just on the greens, but on the fairway. If you were looking at a course that sloped down or had a precipitous upgrade, looking at that in 3D really brought that impact out and made it stronger."

Mr. Konno gives the 3DS remake of Star Fox 64 as an example of the sense of depth that 3D can add. "You know, you have to fly through the rings [from time to time]. It is so much easier to understand where they are and how far it is before you have to get to them because it's in 3D. You're like, oh, it's right there, I have to take this approach instead of seeing it here, I don't know how much time I have It's much easier to develop your flight pattern."

Finally, Hideki Konno noted that while the 3D gameplay was a great thing that they really wanted to push, players needed to be able to turn it off at any point they wish. Therefore, while 3D gameplay is beneficial to the 3DS games it should not be essential.
