News: Nintendo Limiting WiiWare Developers

The amount of titles and their file size are to be limited for WiiWare developers. Details inside.

Nintendo have set a couple of ground rules to developers looking to work on downloadable WiiWare games for the Wii. IGN claim there is to be a size limit of 40MB for any game, which could prove limiting to some. It is likely this has been set so the Wii's limited memory isn't filled up too quickly.

Additionally, IGN claim the Big N has set a 'one a month' policy, to limit the amount of titles third parties can produce. Possible reasons - so that Nintendo's own titles gain greater prominence (its not unlikely that they themselves won't be restricted to this) and to stop thousands of rubbish titles (think Facebook, and all its 'great' new applications).

This news has been unearthed by IGN, who also detailed a budget of less than $100,000 for each title, and a scheme where Nintendo will actively pay the companies quicker for their titles if the games are smaller in size.

Sense can be seen behind this all, and Nintendo has responded to IGN's digging by confirming they will: "encourage smaller, more compact games for the service [and] contemplating that developers will be able to release one game per month during the launch window in order for us to address potential volume issues ... It is important to remember that one of the keys aspects of the WiiWare service is to allow everyone access to fresh, new content at a low price."

More as it breaks.
