News: Nintendo Localisation Manager Talks Metroid

Nate Bihldorff, Nintendo's senior localisation manager in Treehouse, discusses his involvement with the Metroid franchise.

While game developers, designers and directors frequently get interviewed there are typically hundreds of people who work on each game who are just as critical in making the final product. Shinesparkers recently sat down to talk to Nate Bihldorff who works as the senior localisation manager in Treehouse at Nintendo. He has worked on many titles over the years but he is particularly involved in the Metroid series and spoke to Shinesparkers about the recently released Metroid: Other M.

Mr. Bihldorff said that when he first heard of Metroid: Other M he was "blown away" by the concept of switching between 2D gameplay and first-person exploration. He speaks highly about all the voice actors who helped give the characters within the Metroid universe a voice for the first time and responds to criticisms about their work, stating that after years of silence everyone would expect different voices but only Yoshio Sakamoto, co-creator of the series, would know best.

Speaking of one of the other major criticisms that Metroid: Other M received, that the previous strong Samus was made to take orders from Adam, Mr. Bihldorff noted that the Samus seen in Metroid Fusion was from a later period of her life and her trouble with authority, as seen in that game, developed from incidences such as her relationship with Adam in Metroid: Other M.

Nate Bihldorff also discusses working with Retro Studios, Team Ninja and D- Rockets as well as his own personal feelings towards the franchise so be sure to check out the full interview over on Shinesparkers.
