News: Nintendo Outlines eShop Expansion

Demos, DLC and desktop computer integration are all coming to the eShop.

Many people have claimed that Nintendo has not learnt from its attempt at online on the Wii and DS but the newly announced plans for the Nintendo 3DS eShop seem to be a step in the right direction.

During their investors meeting Nintendo unveiled plans to rapidly expand exactly what the eShop can do according to Andriasang. Plans for demos released through the service are under way, with developers able to limit the number of times a user can play the demo. Nintendo hopes that through using demos and the pre-existing rating system players can get a better understanding of a game before they buy it.

As well as increasing support before gamers purchase titles Nintendo is keen to increase the enjoyability of a game once it has been purchased by offering up downloadable content. Not much is known about how this will be operated but according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata this is a feature that has long been desired for by developers. A micro-payment system is expected to be included in next month's 3DS update, with Nintendo themselves expecting to release software in 2012.

Nintendo plans to allow users to search the eShop content online through their computers and phones. When the service is initially launched, and release details are not currently known, users will not be able to purchase directly from the computer. What will happen is they will be presented with a QR code that they can scan on the 3DS, although Nintendo plans complete computer integration in the future.

Finally a future update will give the 3DS the ability to download eShop titles while the console is in sleep mode, meaning you won't have to watch the downloading animation ever again if you so choose. Nintendo did not announce when these updates would be coming, although it won't be during the next eShop update in November.
