News: Nintendo Patents Rumble-Stylus System

Want more rumble from your handheld? Nintendo seems to be looking into it...

While there have been attempts in the past to integrate rumble technology into handhelds, there really hasn't yet been a solution to give players a substantial physical feedback for gamers on the go.

That may be set to change in the future though, with Nintendo having recently filed an intriguing patent. The technology entailed in the system centres around the player directly receiving tactile feedback through their stylus. The patent states that different levels of vibration could be transferred depending on the in-game situation.

A game apparatus includes an LCD, and a touch panel is placed on a top surface of the LCD. A player instructs an enemy character displayed on the LCD by use of a stick to attack the enemy character. For example, in a case that the enemy character exists at a depth of a game screen, little damage is applied to the enemy character, and a weak vibration is applied to the game apparatus. Conversely, in a case that the enemy character exists at a front of the game screen, much damage is applied to the character, and a strong vibration is applied to the game apparatus. In either case, the vibrations are transmitted to the fingers or hands of the payer via the stick.

Of course, this plan could simply end up being locked away in a drawer over at Nintendo HQ, but we've certainly seen more bizarre patents come to fruition. In fact, it would only seem natural to develop immersive features for a device that utilises touch-input from the player. Perhaps we'll be seeing this kind of technology sooner rather than later.

What are your thought? Would sophisticated rumble technology be welcomed in your handheld? Drop a comment below...
