Nintendo launch the WiiWare project for large and small developers to create downloadable content for Wii gamers. All the details, inside.
The Big N has announced the beginning of a search for the next ingeniously ground-breaking video game. At a private developers conference, Nintendo has introduction WiiWare, a game-creation service that will allow developers large and small to create new downloadable video game content for sale by Nintendo through the Wii Shop Channel.
What Nintendo have highlighted as an especially positive about the service is that it paves the way for smaller, more creative games from indie developers to make their way to the public at lower prices, without any financial risk to developers. Nintendo are hoping that combined with the unique controls provided by the Wii, developers will be able to make truly fresh new games through this inexpensive and simple new service.
"Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "WiiWare brings new levels of creativity and value to the ever-growing population of Wii owners."
WiiWare titles will be posted on the Wii Shop Channel from the beginning of next year. As with current Wii Shop Channel offerings, users will redeem Wii Points to download content. No news on pricing options or actual WiiWare games as yet - Nintendo are saving those for a later date.
