News: Nintendo Say 'No' To Cross-Platform MMO

Resolution and memory limitations of the Wii are seen as problems by Square-Enix.

Many gamers have seen the online possibilities of the Wii as a gateway to more advanced online experiences that were never possible on the GameCube and DS. MMOGs (mass multiplayer online games) are technically possible on the Wii, but we've heard little on this front since the Wii launch, as most developers seem to be still swimming in the money they're making from cheap minigame-compilations, ports and rip-offs.

Sqaure-Enix's Hiromichi Tanaka recently spoke at the Austin Game Developers Conference about his hugely popular MMORPG Final Fantasy XI and other projects. Tanaka responded to a question about the likelihood of his next project ending up on the Wii. Unfortunately, his response wasn't optimistic. "Nintendo's currently not allowing different cross-platform titles, and as you know, the resolution differences make it harder for us to make cross-platform games. Currently we're not looking at Nintendo Wii as a platform." Tanaka claimed that it was technically possible on the Wii, as long as Nintendo release a hard drive attachment.
