News: Nintendo's Shareholder Meeting Report

A Nintendo shareholder meeting attendee reveals what went on inside those four walls in Kyoto.

Nintendo hosted a shareholder meeting yesterday to discuss the company's current position and its plans for the future. One of the attendees wrote about what happened in their blog, which Andriasang has kindly translated.

Not a great deal of new information was unveiled but Satoru Iwata confirmed a few points he had already spoke about with others. For example when asked Mr. Iwata noted that it is technically possible to use the 3DS as a second controller for the Wii U, although whether or not this will be implemented is unknown at the moment. Apparently by doing this you lose the ability to go online, although it is not clear whether this is for the 3DS, Wii U or both, and it also forces gamers to buy both systems.

Nintendo's earnings are down on previous years and in line with this board members also earned less than previous years, with Satoru Iwata earning 137 million yen, making him the only member to earn over 100 million yen.

Satoru Iwata stated that reactions to Wii U from those who attended E3 were positive, while coverage was less positive from those who did not attend the show. What Mr. Iwata was implying here was that Nintendo can convey the value of the Wii U when people actually get a chance to try it out.

Initial sales for the 3DS have been lower than they anticipated and Nintendo are hoping not to have this problem with the Wii U. Mr. Iwata believes that the core market will be more accepting of the Wii U than the Wii because it features traditional controls and HD graphics, something Nintendo didn't include with the Wii due to cost. Addressing HD graphics Satoru Iwata noted that Japanese developers have said that the Zelda demo shown could not be replicated on other machines and it was made in a relatively short period of time so he feels HD development will not be an issue.
