News: No Plans for Slimline Wii in North America

Nintendo of America shuns something else coming to Europe, this time a whole console...

As if (thus far) denying North American gamers Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story and Pandora's Tower wasn't amazing enough, it seems Nintendo of America have developed a similar fear, this time of releasing new consoles.

This morning saw the announcement of a slightly streamlined Wii console. Removing Gamecube backwards-compatibility, Wii is more compact than ever, and will hit shelves in Europe later this year, replacing the current Wii model, and will be bundled with Wii Party and Wii Sports.

But while it was expected the slimline Wii would roll out worldwide, Nintendo of America have stated that they have no current plans to release this 'Family Edition' package.

"Nintendo of America does not currently have any plans to release the Wii bundle that was announced by Nintendo of Europe on Aug. 17. Consumers in the United States can currently purchase a Wii console bundled with the Mario Kart Wii game and Wii Wheel accessory for a suggested retail price of $149.99. The Wii Party game is available separately for a suggested retail price of $39.99."

It's perfectly possible that NOA will introduce the new model in future, just not until the branch has its own bundle to announce. If the streamlined Wii is indeed markedly cheaper to mass-produce, it would only make sense to make the switch.
