News: No Revo Controls For Twilight Princess?

After appearing to almost confirm it, has Reggie now sunk any hopes of Revolution controls for Twilight Princess?

Maybe Nintendo's plan is to confuse us all so much, that when E3 comes along and Revo controls are announced, we'll all be so thankful just to finally know what's going on. But at the moment, things don't look good...

Speaking with Engadget, Nintendo of America's Reggie Fils-Aime said the following: "All of the GameCube games will be compatible only with GameCube accessories, so whether it's a WaveBird or whether it's a wired controller, you'll only be able to play those titles with those accessories. Essentially what we're saying is that Revolution titles are the only ones that will leverage the new controller."

Time and time again, Twilight Princess has been confirmed as a GameCube game, and as GameCube games will be compatible "only" with GameCube accessories... it seems this is a pretty strong denial of the game having Revolution functionalities.

But compare these words to some of Reggie's when he was interviewed by EGM earlier this month, where he almost confirms the game will have Revolution controls: "The trick will be what makes [the game] special to play on Revolution, and to the extent that we could create something like that, boy, wouldn't that be fantastic? Certainly one of the things that I would love to see is something that makes Zelda, when it's played on Revolution, do something magical. And I think that any Nintendo fan would love to see that." Certainly quite a difference.

This denial is just the latest in a long, long line of comments about the rumoured Revolution functionality, which has been rumbling along since it was announced last year that Twilight Princess would be delayed:

August 16th 2005: Twilight Princess delayed to include "incredible new elements... [that will] enrich the game and make it a multi-million seller."
December 22nd: NGC Magazine claim they can "exclusively reveal [the game] will be playable on the forthcoming Revolution using the upcoming console's unique controller". (Scans of the article can be found here.)
January 6th 2006: Nintendo rebuke NGC's claims, saying "the article in the January edition of NGC Magazine is pure speculation."
January 11th: NGC deny their article was speculation: "The news came from somebody senior at Nintendo who, admittedly, probably shouldn't have let it slip before E3. But they did, and we would have been crazy not to print it."
February 8th: Reggie's EGM interview, as quoted above: "One of the things that I would love to see is something that makes Zelda, when it's played on Revolution, do something magical."
February 19th: Reggie confirms an Autumn release. You know, [sword-fighting using the Revolution controller in the game] is a great idea. We should talk to Miyamoto about it but, you know, right now the focus is really getting it out on GameCube.
February 22nd: Today's news, which seems to almost explicitly deny any forward compatibility.

Stay tuned to Revo-Europe as the saga continues...
