News: Original Zelda 3DS Game Announced

Aonuma lets the cat out of the bag and confirms that a brand new 3DS title is in development...

Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has confirmed in an interview what Nintendo's plans are for the immediate future of the Zelda series - and it doesn't involve Majora's Mask. Speaking to Portuguese site MyGames, Aonuma confirmed that a 3DS title is in development, however it will not be a remake and will not follow-on from the DS titles Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks:

'We are now preparing a new game, a game for Nintendo 3DS, but do not think of it as a direct sequel to The Legend of Zelda games on the Nintendo DS - we are talking about a new game but it takes a lot of what was done on previous consoles.'

Aonuma did however touch on the possibility of a Majora's Mask remake in the future, but indicated that Miyamoto did not feel that it would be the correct time to release another remake, especially so soon after Ocarina of Time 3D:

It's something I'm asked about a lot and I can assure you it's something that I've talked to Miyamoto about it. But having recently released The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D as a remake ... it did not seem right to launch a remake after the other, so the next Zelda game on Nintendo 3DS will be an original.

No extra details or timeframe for the game's release was given.
