News: Pac-Man & Galaga Ditches High Score Tables

Pac-Man is all about competing for high scores right? Not the case in Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions it seems.
Cast your minds back to last month when Capcom's Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D was embroiled in controversy over the fact that you could not delete data, meaning that when you had played through it once that was it. Many fans were outraged that their game effectively could only be played once and many felt it was Capcom's way of trying to squash the pre-owned market, even resulting in HMV refusing to trade in the title.
It would appear that we're in this situation again with Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions to some degree. The title was released in North America yesterday and is due out next month in Europe. It contains four different takes on the Pac-Man and Galaga titles but according to a review by Wired Namco Bandai has implemented a restricted high score saving system.
Wired report that while you can compare you high scores to those of your friends or anyone else in the world you cannot do so with yourself. The game lacks any high score table according to the reporter Chris Kohler, who claims he has checked through the game and its documentation, meaning once you beat your own score you can't look back at your old ones.
For some players this won't matter. All they will care about is beating their own high score and showing their friends. However, as Mr. Kohler points out the high score table existed in the original arcade game and this method eliminates competitive rivalry between friends as they can no longer pass a 3DS amongst each other and compete for the best score.
Whatever Namco Bandai's reason for this approach is it is bound to ruffle a few feathers. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
