... though the numbers are being contested. Details - as well as software chart news - inside.
The cut-price and jazzed up PlayStation 3 has made it a second week ahead of the Wii in Japan, with Wii sales at 36,000 units and PS3 sales at 53,000 (down from last week by a small amount). Sony's figure comes from Japanese gaming bible Famitsu's publisher Enterbrain, and interestingly is currently being contested.
Our usual Japanese chart numbers source Media Create has clocked up the same number of Wii consoles sold, but only 39,000 PS3 units - its currently unclear which number is correct, or where the discrepancy lies.
Regardless, Nintendo saw a healthy week in the software chart with Mario Party DS top of the chart for another week, selling over 100,000 (making its total over 350,000 already) and the newly launched Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles at number two, selling 82,000 copies in its first week. In all, Nintendo secured seven of the top ten spaces on the chart with software for its systems.
