In what would be a first for the download service, Sega are planning to release the puzzle-action classic Puyo Puyo on the Virtual Console, but with added online multiplayer.

The move comes as the franchise celebrates its twentieth anniversary. The original 1991 arcade game has been ported, emulated and remade across over a dozen platforms.

Conventionally, games released on the Virtual Console have no updated features or additions at all. Puyo Puyo will break the mould when it releases in Japan this spring.

A release for the game on western Virtual Console services is yet to be announced.
