News: Reggie Discusses Indie Developers

Reggie Fils-Aime has clarified some of his recent comments about independent developers.

Last week Nintendo of America's boss Reggie Fils-Aime stated that they draw a line between "hobbyists and true indie devs" and how they don't wish to work with the former. Speaking to Joystiq at the 3DS launch event he clarified some of the confusion that has arisen.

Clarifying his comments Mr. Fils-Aime stated that the company want to work with companies that consist of "people who spent time working with larger publishers and larger developers, but had that idea in the back of their head that they needed to bring to life". He draws a comparison to "hobbyists" who work in their garage making games.

Reggie Fils-Aime noted that Nintendo's work with Gaijin Games and 2D Boy on the WiiWare service are two examples that they have worked with in the past and are proud of. While Nintendo will apparently encourage anyone without experience to keep working hard they need experience within the industry first so that they know the craft.

"These are talented developers. That's different from the person who envisions themselves as a developer, but actually hasn't necessarily created anything, who doesn't necessarily understand what it takes in this business to create compelling content. That's where we draw the line."

It would seem that anyone wanting to get their games published on one of Nintendo's console they need to get some industry experience first.
