News: Reggie On Revolution, 360 and DS Lite 2?

The Regginator speaks once again - on the competition, on the possibility of another DS re-design, and a new franchise for Revolution that'll be as big as Zelda...

Chatting to Engadget, VP for sales & marketing Reggie Fils-Aime kicked off by saying a new franchise will be unveiled by Nintendo at E3. It is not the first time we've heard this, as omments from the company in the past have said there would be new series of games in store for the console. Apparent, the goal is that the new franchise would become a major Nintendo property, possibly as big as Zelda.

Talking Revolution, Reggie said feedback from developers had been "fantastic", and that over a thousand controller development kits had been shipped. "Developers are truly embracing the innovation. They're embracing the approach and quite frankly, they're embracing our vision; our vision of creating games that are as sophisticated as the core gamer wants it to be but could also be as straightforward and as accessible as brand new gamers [want]."

On the competition, he claimed the other companies were taking an "exclusionary" path, expensive for both the consumer and the developer. When asked about the Xbox 360, he said he had played it and felt "underwhelmed." Commenting that if he was a games fan, "would I have shelled out what is close to $700 when you look at the premium unit, some software, some accessories? If I would've done that I'd be disappointed right now."

Despite the Xbox 360's high-definition graphics, he said that "all of the next-generation systems will look great, but HD games don't look as good on the majority of regular TVs. The question is which one will have amazing new kinds of games with innovative experiences. The answer is Revolution."

Despite the DS Lite not yet hitting shop shelves, Reggie wouldn't rule out a third DS redesign, though no other details were given. Staying with handhelds, he said that the Game Boy Micro's less than amazing sales are what Nintendo had projected, and that the system would continue to sell for the foreseeable future. Though when asked about the next-generation Game Boy, he dodged the question and said the interviewer should ask Satoru Iwata instead!

Keep it locked on R-E as E3 draws nearer and nearer!
