News: Reggie Talks About 3DS Missteps

Reggie Fils-Aime talks about where he feels the 3DS has gone wrong and what Nintendo is doing to fix that.

Tomorrow sees the 3DS drop in price in America and Europe, having done so already today in Japan. The news that Nintendo was to reduce the console by as much as 40% across the world led to much speculation and interpretation about why they chose to do this but there seemed to be a universally agreed opinion - the 3DS did not go to plan.

Following record breaking pre-orders and first day sales Nintendo had high expectations for their new handheld but since the release sales have actually fallen behind the DS and Wii. Speaking to MTV Nintendo of America's president addressed the fact that early indicators suggested the 3DS was going to be much more successful than it has been but following lower than anticipated sales Nintendo is taking action:

"Based on the pre-sales and based on the strong day-one sales, at that point we certainly felt that the value equation was appropriate. What I will say is that this is a momentum business. We know we have to have strong momentum going into the holiday timeframe. In order to address that, we've taken this dramatic step of reducing the price, doing it fairly early in the platform's life, to address the value equation and to reset that value equation beginning this Friday."

Nintendo is not just relying on cutting the price though. Reggie Fils-Aime was keen to stress that Nintendo is also ensuring gamers have some fantastic games to enjoy as many early criticisms of the console stating there just isn't the software out there:

"What were are doing in order to rectify this is, first, making sure we have great games. Because, in the end, a platform is driven by the quality and quantity of content to be enjoyed on the platform. And we think, really, with the launch of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the platform, we are now in a steady pace of having very good content coming on the platform with Starfox, with the two Mario titles [Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land], with Pokémon [Super Scramble] and obviously Kid Icarus[we have] very strong content coming."

Mr. Fils-Aime also noted that the 3DS lacked any digital content at launch, with the eShop coming some months later than the console itself. However, he believes with the eShop now in place alongside Nintendo Video and Netflix in America Nintendo has "addressed that issue as well".

Looking to the future Reggie Films-Aime stated "we will take learning from 3DS, both positive and opportunities and apply all of those to the launch next year of Wii U," including "the importance of digital" and "he importance of strong first-party support right at the launch". While he states that Nintendo look at every title they launch and what did and did not work it seems Nintendo are eager to learn their lessons from the 3DS going ahead.
