Nintendo's presence at the Game Developers Conference means that more news has been released. Come inside to find out just what Nintendo have planned for the Revolution and DS, and that much-loved word beginning with "o" appears a few times.
Speaking at the Game Developers Conference today Nintendo president Satoru Iwata spoke about their plans for the upcoming Revolution console. While he stated that you can expect cutting edge graphics and audio he emphasised that the console will be much more than that.
Iwata began by announcing that IBM and ATI are both on board to work on the machine. IBM's CPU chip, nicknamed the "Broadway" chip, will supply the console with its processing power. Meanwhile ATI's "Hollywood" graphic's chip will work alongside it.
"We're excited to be developing the graphics chip set for Revolution, which continues our longstanding relationship with Nintendo," explained Dave Orton, ATI Technologies' president and chief executive officer. "As the leading graphics provider, ATI is committed to delivering exceptional visual performance that enables consumers to interact with new and visually compelling digital worlds. ATI is proud to support Nintendo's innovative contributions to gaming."
Iwata also confirmed that the Revolution would be backward-compatible with the GameCube, meaning GameCube owners need not worry about having useless titles when the new console launches.
In news that is sure to cause a stir, Revolution will be Wi-Fi compatible "out of the box". This will go nicely with the online plans for the DS, more of which is discussed below.
Iwata showed a brand new Zelda trailer. We have screens from the trailer, which are available to admire here. However what makes it more special is the fact we now also have a link to the trailer for download as well right here."This is Nintendo's plan: make our existing game world better. For us, this is a passion. This is a mission of adventure."
As mentioned earlier Nintendo also announced plans for the DS to finally go online. They confirmed that when the service launches later this year players will be able to connect to any of the Wi-Fi hotspots, found all around the world.
With this in mind Nintendo are currently hard at work on Animal Crossing DS. While the game was not shown this is sure to cause fans to get more than a bit excited. Nintendo also showed off Nintendogs and Electroplankton to audiences. Commenting on the former Iwata said; "This is designed to produce harmony, not adrenaline."
Also during the talk Iwata played an eight-player multiplayer Mario Kart DS game with audience members, to highlight the DS' wireless multiplayer options.
Iwata also announced that the DS shipments had surpassed four millions in the US and Japan since launching in November. This number will reach six million when the DS is launched in Europe tomorrow.
