News: Sega Admits To Making Too Many Sonic Games

A Sega executive admits that they've made too many Sonic titles in the past.

Sonic the Hedgehog officially turned 20 yesterday and to coincide with this Sega West's Mike Hayes admitted that Sega has been "making too many Sonic games", but promises this is all about to change and claims Sonic Generations is "an experience that people have been waiting for for a long time".

Speaking to Eurogamer Mr. Hayes reflected back on the critical panning of Sonic the Hedgehog on the PS3 and 360 and noted that Sega has realised that they have two different audiences for the Sonic franchise:

"We've got us lot sitting around the table that's the original fanbase, which is huge, and then we've got a younger audience that just sees Sonic as a good icon but they want a game that's relevant to them."

After a period of confusion over this, which Mike Hayes admitted led to some of the series' poorer offerings, he insists that the development teams now know what to strive for and are on "a single-minded process for them to try and improve".

Sonic Generations is due out on the Nintendo 3DS, PS3 and Xbox 360 later this year and Mr. Hayes believes that, following the success of Sonic 4: Episode 1 and Sonic Colours, Sega is on track to restoring the hedgehog's reputation.
