News: Sonic Colours Was Sega's Top Game in 2010

The Wii and DS title Sonic Colours was Sega's most successful game in 2010.

Sega Sammy's group sales and earnings for 2010 were recently published and according to Andriasang the Wii and DS game Sonic Colours was the company's top selling title. Sonic Colours sold 2.18 million units worldwide, over one million units ahead of the next biggest selling title Iron Man 2.

The company's earning report for the last financial year is a cause for celebration for the Sega Sammy group. Sales rose 3.1% over the year and operating income increased 87.3% to 68,750 million yen. While in Japan a lot of the profits came from their panchinko machines the company's biggest market was Europe. Across the twenty titles that the Sega Sammy group released last year 8.23 million units were sold in Europe, compared to 7.83 million units across 16 titles in America. Only 15 titles were released in Japan and they sold 2.63 million units, providing worldwide sales of 18.71 million units.

While Sonic Colours may have been their biggest selling title they enjoyed the most success on the PSP, followed closely by Xbox 360, PC, Wii and DS. The company expects the PS3 to be its highest earner in the upcoming financial year, followed by the 3DS which Sega Sammy are hoping to release 20 titles for. They are also hoping to release 11 titles for the Wii and anticipate it to be their third highest grossing platform in the next financial year.

Sonic features in several of the company's games for next year. Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games was recently announced for the Wii, DS and 3DS and is rumoured to be released around Christmas. Sega also announced Sonic Generations, a celebration of the hedgehog's 20 year anniversary, for various consoles but not for the Nintendo Wii, DS or 3DS. Hopefully they will announce a new Nintendo exclusive title at E3 next month.
