News: Sony Comments on 3D Gaming

Sony Mick Hocking talks about what he feels does and doesn't work in terms of 3D gaming.

While both Nintendo and Sony are pushing 3D gaming they are doing so in very different ways. Nintendo is focusing on glasses-free 3D with the Nintendo 3DS while Sony are focusing on 3D gaming that requires glasses, with Mick Hocking even suggesting it is the "only way" to enjoy 3D.

Mr. Hocking spoke to Gamespot during Gamescom last week and once again shared his opinions on 3D gaming. When Gamespot states "the performance of Nintendo's 3DS suggests that maybe gamers aren't quite as wild about the technology as previously thought," Mr. Hocking says he "wouldn't comment directly on 3DS". However, he does have something to say about 3D gaming:

"I think what we've seen over the last 12 months is a strong correlation between good-quality 3D content and great response from our fan base. The opposite is also true. When people see 3D that doesn't work very well, or content that isn't very compelling, I think quite naturally they're not as interested in it."

Mick Hocking then continues to speak about the Sony "10 3D quality checks" that all their games must adhere to, which ultimately adds up to 3D being something to enhance a game rather than "a tickbox we want on all the game boxes".

When asked whether or not 3D was discussed for their upcoming handheld, the Vita, Mr. Hocking says while developing the console they thought about how the ability to output in 3D would have been affected by the need to be able to move the console using its inbuilt gyroscope. Ultimately Sony decided for this reason that it wasn't suitable for the Vita, or "at least the first one", suggesting it could be used in the future.
