News: Space Invaders Invading DS

Rising Star Games are planning on updated and releasing the arcade classic Space Invaders onto the Nintendo DS.

Rising Star Games are planning to fully utilise the DS' features for their upcoming Space Invaders Revolution. According to the press release the game will marry 'the vintage game play of the legendary shoot-'em up with the exciting new possibilities offered by the unique features of the Nintendo DS'.

After announcing recently that Rising Star Games will hope to release European games alongside Japanese ones they are taking one step further with Space Invaders Revolution, by hoping to launch it in Europe prior to Japan.

To keep old-school fans happy Rising Star Games are promising to include a version identical to that in the arcade, where players can either use the touch screen or the direction buttons.

However, the game also offers a 'New Era Mode' which updates the game for the post-Pong gamers. This mode promises to "twist" the gameplay, and apparently add puzzle elements.

It seems that as time has progressed aliens have become more mobile as well. The New Era Mode will see players jet around the world trying to stop aliens invading, thankfully Will Smith will be staying at home. To spice up the gameplay each location will feature unique geographical aspects, to put this into context when fighting aliens in London players must shoot aliens in a colour-coded order to defend Big Ben. So guessing nobody cares about the Houses of Parliament then?

Other known locations in the game includes Athens, whereby players are at the Acropolis and must defeat a lone invader. However the invader is heavily armoured and will require skill to eliminate. As well as these geographical differences the game also varies the invaders, with others such as 'shadow invaders', who blink in and out of the screen, being present during the game.

The game also promises 20 different challenge locations, which comprise of 60 levels. To help along the way players will get power-ups, such as protective shields, additional support craft, rapid-fire shots and column-clearing laser beams. To further the help the power ups can be used in combination, to power-up the power-ups some more.

The game is due out in Spring 2005 and is looking like a great game for old fans to relieve the era of 1-bit sound effects, and for new fans who just can't get enough of aliens.
