News: Square Enix Expects Wii 2 For 2011

Square Enix president Yoichi Wada reckons Nintendo will wheel out a Wii successor in two years...

Despite the Wii still selling like hotcakes three years after launch, one man in Japan is already expecting Nintendo to bring out a new console in 2011.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Yoichi Wada - president of Japanese publisher Square Enix - expressed his belief that 2011 will see Nintendo bring out a new Wii console; one that has boasts many of the functionalities Sony's PS3 and Microsoft's current Xbox have (presumably HD at least). Wada-san also states that a new controller for this hypothetical SKU is a possibility.

In the same interview, the executive gave his thoughts on Sony and Microsoft's own attempts to embrace motion-controlling gameplay part way through the generation.

"Present game machines already have a lot of functions: they are a network terminal, a Blu-ray or DVD player, and a gaming machine. Compared to these three pillars, the [new motion] controllers are quite limited, so the impact may be small. They are an extension of the gaming function."

What do you think? 2011 sounds a bit early to us for a new console to invest in, but would you pick up a HD Wii so soon? Sound off below...
