News: Take 2 buy Angel Studios

Germany-based publisher Take Two have acquired the acclaimed Angel Studios for $28 million (29 million).

European publisher Take-Two announced earlier this afternoon that they have purchased Angel Studios for several million plus stock. Angel Studios will be rebranded Rockstar San Diego, and should bank a little success from GTA3, the fruit of Scottish dev-house Rockstar who also form part of the Take 2 empire.

Rockstar Diego employ upwards of one hundred and twenty-five people and are credited with projects such as Midnight Club and Smuggler's Run 2: Warzones. They were also responsible for the Nintendo-joint venture Buggie Boogie and the Nintendo 64 port of Resident Evil 2. Rockstar San Diego are now working on the sequel to PS2-hit Midnight Club, which is scheduled for release in Europe in April 2003.

Both parties are on the outset predictably pleased with the tie up; in what could be seen as yet another uber-developer chewing up a smaller yet lucrative software house. Rare and Micro$oft anyone?
