News: The DS Is Seeing Red

Another new DS color is slated to hit the market... for Japan. Of course.

Nintendo has just announced plans to release a new DS colour, Red, in the newest issue of popular manga magazine Shonen Jump. The Red DS, currently slated for an August 8th release in Japan, will join Platinum, Graphite Black, Candy Pink, Turquoise Blue and Pure White as main DS colors (along with a handful of special additions, the pearly-pink new Mew DS announced last week.) DS Red is set to retail at the same price as its multi-colored cousins, or 15,000 yen (US$ 139). It will feature a two-toned colour setup with the lower portion in black to set off the upper half's red finish.

It ties into the same-day release of the 4-player party fighting game Jump Superstars, based appropriately enough on Jump's comic properties including Dragon Ballz, One Piece, Naruto and many others. It should prove to be a formidable selling duo come August.

Now, the question is when will Europe see this spicy new color (not to mention the game it is associated with)? A good question, and one that unfortunately has yet to be answered. Outside of Japan, the colour-equality has been severely lacking thus far. Hopefully the summer and autumn will see more multi-colored love for the west.

Keep checking back for (good) pictures of the new Red DS and other designs as Nintendo Japan releases them.
