News: THQ Helps uDraw

THQ have announced a graphics tablet for the Wii along with a few upcoming titles that support it.

The uDraw tablet from THQ allows Wii users to plug in their Wii remote and "express themselves", as the announcement trailer stated. The tablet itself is a reasonably sized chunky device (to ensure it doesn't break) that can house the Wii remote, which the stylus then attaches to.

The tablet is due to be released early next year in Europe with a recommended retail price of $69.99 in America and European pricing to be confirmed. It comes with uDraw Studio, a piece of creative software that allows you to draw, paint and create. The software comes with a range of features such as backdrops, a variety of brushes as well as manipulation tools. You can then save the images as JPGs and share them with your friends.

The tablet also features "tilt and roll movement", meaning players can use it to interact with and control characters within the games. The stylus is more precise than the Wii remote so it is used for drawing but the Wii remote is used for item selection and changing options (e.g. pressing B to bring up an art palette).

THQ are also planning a number of titles to support the software well into 2013, although only two have been shown so far; Pictionary and Dood's Big Adventure. Pictionary is, unsurprisingly, a version of the classic board game but with a game show twist. Dood's Big Adventure is a platforming game in which players navigate across 60 different levels that are customised using the player's drawings. These two titles will be available at launch.

“We've designed the uDraw GameTablet to offer something for everyone: the kids can doodle, save their creations on an SD-Card and print their artwork for display on the refrigerator. Students can improve their skills through in-game tutorial lessons. And the whole family can sit down together for family game time with products like Pictionary,” added Executive Vice President, THQ Kids, Family, Casual Games and Global Online Services, Martin Good.

The uDraw software looks set to bring a whole new range of titles to the Wii as well as a fresh way to interact with the console. Stay tuned to N-Europe for more news as it breaks.
