News: THQ Optimistic About Christmas Sales

THQ have stated that in spite of a comparatively slow year for Wii and DS sales they expect a good performance this holiday period.

THQ's UK marketing director Jon Rooke has spoken to Gamesindustry.biz about his company's expectations this holiday period. Even though the Wii and DS sales have been down this year he expects them to pick up in the coming months, much like they did at the end of 2009.

THQ will be launching a large marketing campaign for their 'Great Games, Great Value' line-up that includes titles such as Barbie, Hot Wheels, Megamind, Truth or Lies, Superhero Squad, Pictionary, Penguins of Madagascar and The Biggest Loser. This campaign is similar to one they did in 2006 after the Disney Pixar film Cars was delayed and caused troubles for their intended seasonal line-up.

THQ have proposed the idea to numerous retailers and they are all keen to jump on board. At this time of year it is difficult for retailers to promote the wide variety of titles available on the market so THQ hope to raise awareness for some of their titles that may have otherwise been missed.

"We went out to retail, we presented the proposal, and the response was unanimously positive," he said. "They all loved the idea, that we were coming to them with a solution to a problem at Christmas, and every single retailer brought into the umbrella campaign. The process we've been going through ever since has just been fine-tuning those plans with retail - which titles are they taking, what are their hero titles."

"The whole campaign is focused with retail in mind, so all the TV will be tagged with a retailer. A 30-second ad might have two or three titles in it, and the end message will be something like: 'Great games, such as Megamind, available now from ASDA' - at whatever the pricing is."

Speaking about the decline of Wii and DS sales over the year Jon Rooke compared the Wii to a traditional toy in the sense it often sees greater sales during the holiday period, whereas many others are claiming that the Wii's days are numbered.
