News: THQ Talks About Not Needing New Consoles

THQ President and CEO Brian Farrell takes about how he thinks the industry doesn't need new hardware.

In an interview with IGN, THQ President and CEO Brian Farrell tells us his thoughts on the gaming industry as well as the current life cycle of the current home consoles. To start with, Brian thought that the additions of PlayStation Move and Kinect will prolong the current consoles lifespan and increase the gaming audience.

"Frankly, the last thing I think the industry needs now is new hardware. You look at the games coming out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 now and they look stunning. If we were to have another $1000 box that the hardware guys have to subsidize and that software developers have to spend even more money developing, that model just doesn't work. So to have an extended cycle with a broader audience I think, strategically, is exactly the right way to go, and Move and Kinect are both designed to do that."

Brian went on to say how he likes the concept of both of the hardware manufacturers trying to expand their audience beyond just the core gamers and the market will decide if one or both of the products will make it. When asked when a suitable time frame for a new launch of hardware would be good, Brian couldn't give a hard date and said he doesn't see the value for gamers buying new hardware in the future. He explained:

"When you talk about games or consoles, I always go back to what's in it for the gamer? What's the proposition for the person shelling out the $300-$400 for the system and the $60 for a game, what is value proposition for that gamer? And right now, I don't know what that is in the next console cycle."

Brian also explained how he believes games have good enough graphics and audio that now, the evolution of games will be driven by the emotional experiences that gamers will have and that the days of graphics and technology are over with now that the graphics are already "pretty darn good". He believes that the play experience is now how to drive games, such as a richer story and characters.
