News: Trademark War Rages On

Titles based on the war on Iraq are looking more likely as the gaming world's finest publishers fight to register their trademarks.

War-based game fans can sleep well tonight, safe in the knowledge that the chances of a title based on the war on Iraq finding their way to them are likely. The news that Sony Computer Entertainment America had registered the name 'Shock & Awe' was shrouded in controversy, as the press dubbed the news as "tasteless" and "out of order". The title 'Shock & Awe' was used by President Bush to describe the military operations in Iraq, and the fact that the blood-drenched war would be recreated as a video game disgusted many people. Later that day, SCEA removed the application for registration. On the very same day, Midway registered the name.

Today, news reached us that SCI Games, publishers of Conflict: Desert Storm in Europe, recently registered the names, 'Conflict: Iraqi Freedom' and 'Conflict: Battle For Baghdad'. As we head towards E3, it seems that at least one title based on the war on Iraq will be made, even if it will be laden with controversy.
