You have to feast your eyes on this new trailer...for the just revealed Revolution controller that is.
When Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed the Revolution's shocking new controller, the assembled audience of industry and press were stunned. Then he showed them a trailer featuring the controller and its possible uses that had them applauding with excitement. The trailer, very much in the style of a long commercial, gave a provocative illustration of just what kind of gameplay experiences the new controller will make possible.
The piece is shot in a stylish and intimate fashion depicting various people, of all backgrounds and ages, holding the new controller and facing the camera as if it was a TV. These "players" (certainly hammering home Nintendo's pledge to make a system and games that can be played by anyone) ranged from single males to grandparents, from families to a group of young girls and had them miming with the controllers convincingly and energetically as if they were enjoying different types of Revolution games. No doubt, if this trailer is any indication of what we will be experiencing within a year's time it is time to get very, very excited. Wondering just what the various players were shown enjoying?
In one instance, a man plays tennis by swinging the controller like a racket only to be joined by his enthusiastic girlfriend (and her red-coloured controller) a moment later. The next instant two aspiring chefs turned the controller into a virtual butcher knife as they chopped up what I assume was tasty digital sushi. Another scene change and an elderly couple was shown using the controller as if they were conducting a symphony. Flashing to another location a young man is depicted playing drums with two controllers, using them as sticks. Apparently changing games, the same young man is then shown swinging for the fences (with a mighty swing of the controller) in a next-generation baseball game. Returning to a japanese living room, a grandfather and his young grandson enjoy a bit of fishing using the controller as the fishing rod...the grandfather pulls in the reel (by pulling back on the controller) so strongly that he tips himself over!
Changing scenery again, a business-like gentlemen is shown attending to what seems like a dental patient, using the super-precise controller as a pointing device. Next, a young woman leans forward eagerly, flicking the controller up to make a certain platforming superstar jump into the air. This is followed by a dark, scary scene where the young couple who were playing tennis before are now cautiously exploring a haunted house, using the controller as a flashlight that would illuminate the direction they pointed it in. Turning on the lights, a family decked out in party favors are depicted enjoying a popular party game (hint, hint) only to be replaced with a shadowy scene showing a young man ducking and aiming his controller like a firearm towards the screen. Three girls then appear having a wild time with a bug-catching game, each using their own controller as a zapper.
Finally, a lone young man brings his controller to bear like a sword and deftly swings his arms in expert slicing motions, dicing up his adversary, before ultimately "turning off" the Revolution console by pressing the off button atop the controller.
All in all it was one of the best game-related commericals I have seen and provided an undeniably compelling and exciting glimpse into fresh, amazing experiences that Nintendo has been hinting at for months. Now that you've persevered so long in reading through this, if you haven't seen the trailer yet go here NOW. IGN has the video up and you simply must see it. Seriously, don't hesitate to check it out. Beyond the graphics and the glitz of the promised next-generation is pure gameplay and new experiences, and this trailer provides a compelling promise that it will once again be Nintendo to deliver on that.
