News: Trip Hawkins Famed

Shigeru Miyamoto, Yu Suzuki, Peter Monyleux and now Trip Hawkins...the founder of EA will be entering gaming's hall of fame.

The man who gave us the world's biggest third-party publisher will be joining gaming legends like Miyamoto, Suzuki, Monyleux, Sid Meier, John Carmack and Will Wright in The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame. Hawkins, founder of the much-maligned 3DO Company and now CEO of mobile technology-focused Digital Chocolate, will be awarded the honour in a ceremony in Las Vegas tomorrow night at the 8th Annual Interactive Achievements Awards.

Only individuals who have contributed significantly to the medium get this accolade, for achievements including "changing the face of the art form through new technology; influencing other designers and products; demonstrating the highest level of creativity and innovation".

Joseph Olin, president of AIAS, called Hawkins a "true pioneer". When asked what it felt like to be mentioned in the same breath of such great gaming ambassadors, Hawkins admitted that:

"In some respects I feel like I'm not worthy. How can you compare anybody to Miyamoto? At the same time, it's an incredible honor to be recognized as the first person who's not a full-time game designer. And that actually means a lot to me. I take pride in the work that I've done as a designer and as a creative person. It's great to be associated with other creative people that you yourself are a fan of."
