News: UK Konga Marketing Campaign

Nintendo UK is going to launch a 750,000 publicity drive encompassing PR, TV advertising, sampling and sponsorship.

The TV campaign will consist of 10", 20" and 30" adverts, on both terrestrial and satellite TV, kicking off on Monday 11th October with multi channel and terrestrial advertising across ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5.

In the adverts, created by Leo Burnett UK specifically for the UK market, Donkey Kong is hosting a Japanese style game show where real Nintendo fans play Donkey Konga whilst trying to avoid Donkey Kong's distracting antics. If they smile, they're out! Four little monkey smile-spotters watch their every facial tick through binoculars, and when a smile is spotted, all sorts of banana peel punishment is meted out. The advert was directed by Alex Smith, who also directed The Darkness music video "I Believe In A Thing Called Love."

In addition to TV advertising, Nintendo is sponsoring Takeshi's Castle on Challenge TV. The deal gives Donkey Konga 480 mentions over 120 shows running from 4th October, through launch, until 14th November. The sponsorship idents have been specially created for the campaign by Joel Veitch of cult website www.rathergood.com and has a similar Japanese style and flavour to the TV adverts.

The game will also be heavily sampled at over 300 retail outlets including Game, Gamestation, HMV, Virgin and Toy R Us both pre and post launch.

Dawn Paine, Head of Marketing for Nintendo UK says, "Donkey Konga is a manic, hilarious game and we expect it will be a huge hit with gamers and non-gamers alike. The tone and style of the TV ad is completely in keeping with the game itself. It is something the whole family can play together, even just watching it is funny!"

Nintendo UK is releasing Donkey Konga The Ultimate Bongo Bundle on 15th October which is expected to retail in the UK at around 89. The bongo bashing extravaganza will contain a Nintendo GameCube, a controller, a copy of Donkey Konga and a set of DK bongos.

Donkey Konga launches for Nintendo GameCube on 15th October 2004 and is expected to retail in the UK at around 39 and includes a free set of DK bongos.
