News: Update Kills Twilight Hack, Freeloader

A new Wii Update adds extra functionality to the Mii Channel, and disables the 'Twilight Hack'...

Nintendo have issued a new Wii Update, bringing the current Wii firmware version number up to 3.3. For those whose Wii consoles are now flashing blue, updating your console allows you now to drag and drop a Mii from the Mii Plaza into the Mii Parade directly.

Let's be honest however, this minor new piece of functionality is not the main reason for this update. The major change is that the ability to boot up homebrew software using the 'Twilight Hack' has now been blocked.

The 'Twilight Hack' method is, or was, a way to boot homebrew software without the use of any hardware modifications to the Wii console itself - only requiring an SD card and a copy of Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Anyone who has employed this tactic who now updates will find themselves unable to do so further.

Update - 16:34pm

Datel's Freeloader, which allows Wii games to play imported titles from different regions such as PAL and NTSC, has also been blocked by the update. When the disc is inserted, an error message is displayed and you are prompted to eject the unrecognised disc. Thanks go out to the selfless Ganepark32 for sacrificing his Freeloader for the greater good.
