News: 'Virtual Console' Idea Heading To PS3?

The PlayStation 3 looks like it will utilise a service to download old PSone and PlayStation 2 games. That sounds uncannily familiar...
A key element of PlayStation 3 or even a relaunched PS2 will be the ability to play previously released titles from this generation and the last by downloading them from an internet-based service. According to gaming website GamesIndustry.biz, senior developers have confirmed informal talks with Sony about the logistics of the service, though "purely about technology, not business models".
Are Sony developing a system akin to the Revolution 'virtual console' download system, which will allow players to download NES, SNES and N64 titles? In Sony's case it looks like a bumpier ride, with both PSone and PS2 titles far, far more memory heavy than even any N64 title, and the standard PS3 model still confirmed as not shipping with a hard-drive.
One workaround that was suggested however PS2 titles would be remastered so that the user would be able to play the beginning of a game, while later content would still be streaming from the download service. With the Xbox Live Arcade and Revolution's 'Virtual Console', it is unsuprising Sony is taking steps in this area of the field.
