News: VVVVVV Coming to eShop

The cult Flash game is getting its first release on a gaming console!

In some delightful news, indie studio Nicalis has announced that it is bringing the cult, puzzling platformer VVVVVV to the 3DS eShop.

Released in 2010 on PC, VVVVVV was created by Terry Cavanagh, and instantly gained gratification for its retro style and often uncompromising difficulty. In the game, you control Captain Viridian, and must reach the end of each level by flipping the gravity of the world to traverse the floor and ceiling and avoid deadly traps.

It is perhaps not a surprising move from Nicalis. The studio is famed for bringing a number of indie classics to Nintendo platforms. Cave Story on WiiWare and DSiWare, La-Mulana on WiiWare and the upcoming NightSky on the eShop: these are all projects that Nicalis has undertaken very recently. The studio is promising a number of cool features for VVVVVV:

  • Open-world environment with six unique levels
  • 20 Trinkets to locate and collect
  • Full 3D awesomeness integrated into the retro-looking art style
  • Dual screen functionality with a real-time map!
  • Music by Magnus Plsson
  • New Featured Levels
  • Future content updates
