News: Wi-Fi Considered For Settlers DS

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection support is being considered for the new DS incarnation of The Settlers!

Many gamers will have fond memories of The Settlers, originally released back in 1993, and it was a cause of much celebration when it was revealed the title's original developers Blue Byte were hard at work on a DS incarnation.

Based on the the game's sequel, many details about the title are still unknown. Nintendo Europe have spoken to Ralf Wirsing, Development Director from the game's publisher Ubisoft, who revealed several tidbits about the title, not least that Wi-Fi Connection capabilities are being tested.

"Local wireless definitely is the focus and we also want to make it for Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection but it's tricky to be honest. Our target is to do both but I cannot guarantee it, actually. We tried to test multiplayer with more than two players, maybe four or six; but it depends because it's really a question of tactics. We studied a cooperative mode where you play together to enlarge your territory. This cooperative mode is possible but we're still studying it."

The DS' unique features look to be fully explored by the title, which will organise its displays across both screens and make everything fully controllable through the stylus. And as for a Settlers Wii title?

"I would say we are open for everything. We are making the first step into consoles with Settlers DS. If it is a success - and we strongly believe it could be a success - then there might be other opportunities as well."
