News: Wii Twilight Princess Originally 1st Person

Zelda in the first-person? It could have been so...

During his speech at the Game Developers conference, Eiji Aonuma, director of the Zelda series let slip some interesting details about how Twilight Princess for the Wii originally was set to operate.

With the DS receiving much praise at E3 2005, it was decided that Twilight Princess would benefit from the kind of innovation the DS would bring to the game, then destined for a late-GameCube release. After a suggestion by Shigeru Miyamoto that the title utilised the new Revolution controller, the game was tested in the latter half of 2005 - specifically with the use of the Wii-mote as a bow and arrow.

This led to Aonuma, Miyamoto and Nintendo executives deciding on the title's famous delay, for adding in "exciting new game-play elements". Interestingly, the game was also originally slated to include motion-sensitive sword fighting in the first-person, of the like seen in Ubisoft's Red Steel, however it was felt switching perspectives would take away from the over-all swordplay (ie. Link's special moves).

Maybe we'll see something like this in the next Wii Zelda instead?
