The amount of patients going through "Wiihab" is increasing...
Medics are using the Wii as a replacement to usual therapy to encourage body movements. According to UK newspaper Telegraph:
"similar to traditional therapy but [there is] so much distraction patients do not notice the discomfort"
James Osborn oversees rehabilitation services at Herrin Hospital in southern Illinois. He says that the Wii helps motivate patients by pitting them against a virtual opponent.
The Wii is still far from becoming a large-scale form of therapy, but Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota are working on a study to research how good "Wiihab" really is.
