Nintendo have shown off the GameCube swansong title Super Paper Mario, check out how its looking inside!
Details have emerged of Super Paper Mario from a playable version at the World Hobby Fair, currently taking place in Tokyo. Four stages were playable, each demonstrating how this intriguing platformer/RPG hybrid works.
The title has RPG aspects, such as HP and items, acessible via menus not so unlike the Cube's other Paper Mario title, Thousand Year Door. Probably the coolest factor is that the game can shift perspective when you want it to - you start off in 2D-platformer mode, but at a press of the R button the view changes round 90 degrees, allowing gameplay to switch to 3D instead.
Characters can also be changed on the fly, with Mario, Peach and Bowser available via a free presses of the D-pad. Items include a Mega-Mushroom style star, which transforms your character to the size of the screen for some ultra-big rampaging in the style of the original Super Mario Bros. sprites. Another new tool is the Mini Mario item, which summons loads of miniature Marios to act as your shield, slowly being killed off as they fight enemies around you.
A rather shaky off-screen video can be found on YouTube here, though there's also another one of an epic boss fight (showing the 2D/3D viewpoint switch) which is of much better quality here - well worth checking out.
