New details on the DS version of Namco's Xenosaga...
In the latest Famitsu, Namco unveiled new details on the upcoming Xenosaga for DS. The PS2 RPG series known for its cinematic focus (and infamous for its long cut-scenes) will be revamped for the DS platform in a recreation of sorts incorporating the story elements of the first two Xenosaga titles. The tentative title of this new game was given as Xenosaga 1 + 2.
Further details and new images have highlighted a dramatic (if expected) shift in the graphical focus from 3D to detailed 2D. The art style of the game has likewise shifted from the more realistic bent used in Xenosaga II to a look reminiscent of the anime (and the first game, for that matter.) Story presentation (a central focus of the Xenosaga series) will utilize both gorgeous stills and yes, movies.
Additional changes to the DS game include alterations to the scenarios followed in the PS2 versions...and fans will be thrilled to learn that new characters will be part of the mix. Although the battle system will largely retain the feel of Xenosaga I, at least one new system (referred to as the PF system in the magazine) will spice up the combat.
As surprising as it is to have a series like Xenosaga touching down on the DS platform, the early view of it is looking quite positive. For fans of the series it should prove very interesting what story elements will be altered in this version, and whether or not those changes translate to the big Xenosaga III sequel. Hopefully the game (alongside the new Baten Kaitos games) will be playable at the Tokyo Game Show this Friday. Stay tuned.
