Nintendo doubles Switch production plans following strong demand

The Nintendo Switch has started off well for Nintendo and it is confident enough in the console that the company is now upping their planned production of consoles in the financial year starting April from the previous figure of 8 million to 16 million according to The Wall Street Journal (paywall).

If this turns out to be true, they plan to produce more units in that year than the Wii U sold over its entire lifespan, which would be quite an increase.

This is of course great news for Nintendo if true, although they're unlikely to comment until the investors meeting at the end of April, following disappointing sales of the WiI U.  Nintendo is still stating that the Switch will exist alongside the Nintendo 3DS, but if that turns out to be another "third pillar" comment (the original DS was supposed to sit alongside the GameCube and GBA) then it will need to sell well enough to cover both consoles as Nintendo may just focus on the Switch.

Regardless, the Switch is off to a good start and hopefully one Nintendo can continue to capitalise on.  With big games coming out in the next few months, including Arms, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 we expect units will continue to shift off shelves.
