Nintendo states the Switch is "a home gaming system first and foremost"

Earlier today we finally got our first look at the Nintendo Switch, a console that can be played at home and on the go.  Many have assumed that the form factor means that Nintendo is consolidating their console efforts in to one, replacing the traditional home and handheld console with just the Switch.

In a statement given to Polygon, Nintendo has stated that the Switch is "a home gaming system first and foremost", suggesting perhaps things are not as many assume.

Asked about the future of the Nintendo 3DS the house that Mario built simply said they have not made any announcements about the future of the Nintendo 3DS and added:

“Obviously with sales of almost 60 million 3DS portables worldwide, there’s still a huge hunger for new games, such as Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. There are many more games in the pipeline.”

Of course, Nintendo did once claim the DS was a "third pillar" to support the home and handheld consoles of the time until it became a huge success and this could be simiilar, but for now it looks like you should not count Nintendo out of the dedicated portable console business just yet.
